Patterned Imprinted Concrete

Patterned imprinted concrete (PIC) is a groundbreaking skilled technique. It adds colour and patterns to freshly poured concrete. This recreates the look of real materials like stone and slate as well as timber. This avoids the high prices associated with natural products.

Minimal Maintenance

Patterned concrete is a unique product that needs minimal maintenance. It performs better than other products, such as flagstones and tarmac, block paving and tarmac. Many problems can be solved by a dolomite under-base and four inches fiber reinforced concrete. These problems include sinking, pest control and weed growth. Wood decked patios are more susceptible to block paving, wood decay and pest control.

A concrete floor with a pattern imprinted surface will not only save you money but also enhances the quality and appearance.

What is Pattern Imprinted Concrete?

To simplify, patterned concrete (also called stamped concrete) is made by pouring concrete on top of a subbase. Then a colour is added and a hardener is added. This is a new way to make concrete, unlike traditional concreting which used blocks to make your finish.

The pattern is applied once the concrete has cooled. There are many options for prints to choose from, including brickwork, texture stone, and ashlar stones. Patterned concrete is an attractive choice for domestic properties, particularly when it comes to lining driveways.

Good quality print

It is important to assess the quality of the printed concrete. To properly lay fresh concrete, you need to take extreme care, be patient, and dedicate your time. If the concrete forms inconsistently, it can lead to a weak floor.

Most contractors will use 6-8 rigid printing matsa and 1 flexible mat in a single set. It is necessary to use six mats to span the narrowest section. However, flexible mats are used to access and to print areas that rigid mats won’t.

Although most printing mats measure 600x600mm in size, it is possible to order matts up to 600x600mm.

Colour Consistency

When installing imprinted concrete, it is important to keep in mind the color consistency to ensure your flooring achieves what you want. Colour surface hardener is the main component of patterned concrete. Antique release agents are also important.

A poor appearance will be caused by a poorly applied colour surface hardener or a lack of enough. This is especially evident in commercial jobs larger than retail shop flooring.

Large commercial jobs may require several concrete deliveries. This can result in slight colour variation in each concrete mixture. The surface hardener matches all the colours together once they are applied. This is ideal when larger jobs take longer than a few working days.

Ensuring Long-Term Durability

To ensure that the concrete floor is durable, the sub-stone foundation must be mixed with the ground below it. This could be soil or stone.

A concrete mix is also important in ensuring structural integrity will remain strong for many years.

This is especially important when you live in areas with high traffic, such as driveways and multi-storey car parkings.

Reduce the Chance of the Concrete Cracking

Patterned concrete driveways should contain 300kgs or more cement per cubic meter.

In colder climates, you may need more.

You can also add an air entertainment agent to improve the floor’s durability.

Reducing Maintenance & Maximising Results

A solvent-based acrylic sealant can be applied to patterned concrete once it has dried. This will improve its appearance. Water-based acrylics can be more difficult to use on patterned concrete, so avoid them.

To maintain the appearance of your concrete patterned, it is worth applying sealant at least every four years.

While it’s not required, this will help to keep your driveway (or any other place where our patterned concrete has been installed) looking fantastic for many years.
